Understanding of the story Essay Example For Students
Comprehension of the story Essay Shelley sets pages 94 and 95 where Frankenstein meets the animal, in the mountains since it is somber and barren simply like the animals life. Frankenstein says the animal limited over the cleft in the ice, among which I strolled with alert. Frankenstein here is attempting to disassociate himself from the animal and state hes in no way like him. There is bunches of words related with dreadful magnificence and expand. This is completely connected with the size of the animal and how much the mountains and out is how much the animal sticks out. Frankenstein says its absurd offensiveness rendered it excessively loathsome for natural eyes. This is stating the animal isn't human and makes the peruser think he is a beast. Shelley presents the animal as a beast now to differentiate an alternate perspective. This is to ensure that the peruser doesnt feel an excess of compassion towards the animal or, in all likelihood they would be one-sided towards it and remove their comprehension of the story.Ã This is not quite the same as today on the grounds that deformed individuals today are not rewarded along these lines. There still might be some threatening vibe towards them, however theyre not thought of as monstrosities or cast out of society or disparaged any longer. We will compose a custom exposition on Understanding of the story explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now The peruser feels progressively irate towards Frankenstein since he says Devil, do you dare approach me? This is amusing, on the grounds that Frankenstein was the individual who made the animal, however the animal has never requested to be made. Frankenstein has exposed the animal to this torment so the animal is simply delivering retribution with the murders.Ã We expense compassion toward the animal here on the grounds that he is as a rule totally dismissed even by the one individual who has obligation towards him.Ã Frankenstein utilizes some amazingly brutal language towards the animal, for example, Abhorred beast and Wretched fallen angel. Ironicly Frankenstein attempting to assume control over the job of God wound up making what he considers as the villain. We additionally feel compassion toward the animal since hes being quiet, yet hes clearly irate at Frankenstein yet hes not taking it out on him; Frankensteins compromising him. This could show that the animals really human and can remain calm, or it may be the case that the animal understands that being bursting at the seams with nobody is more terrible than death and he needs Frankenstein to endure like he has.Ã We feel distress for the animal since he has been dismissed every single through hey life in light of the fact that even during childbirth he said he felt half scared. This length of dismissal gives some thinking with regards to his conduct in the later pieces of his life. Mary Shelley places the animals story in light of the fact that this gives us some knowledge into how the animal feels. The animals story from pages 98 129 is composed as a monolog. This is huge on the grounds that this causes the animal to appear to be significantly increasingly separated in light of the fact that hes recounting to the story all on his own.Ã The animal says Darkness at that point came over me and disturbed me. This causes the animal to appear to be not normal for a beast since beasts and underhandedness are typically connected with the dull. Next, the animal plunked down and sobbed. This causes the peruser to feel profound sympathy towards the animal since hes clearly resentful. Indeed, even today in present day society when a man cries we imagine that something downright awful more likely than not occurred in light of the fact that men arent expected to cry. Its seen as powerless so this makes the animal seen frail too. We likewise feel compassion toward the animal since he said here and there I attempted to copy the charming melodies of the winged creature yet was unable, the incoherent sounds which parted from me scared me into quietness again.Ã Trying to make hints of the fowls cause him to appear to be delicate. Incoherent sounds are what infants make and this likewise causes him to appear to be feeble in light of the fact that children are powerless. Additionally we feel frustrated about him here on the grounds that he frightened himself with these sounds. This makes the peruser figure it must be hard for the anima l and very baffling on the grounds that hes got nobody to gain from in light of the fact that hes been left; so he won't be sustained .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .postImageUrl , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:hover , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:visited , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:active { border:0!important; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: obscurity 250ms; webkit-progress: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:active , .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:hover { mistiness: 1; progress: haziness 250ms; webkit-change: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .focused content region { width: 100%; position: rela tive; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-beautification: underline; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; fringe range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe span: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-enhancement: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: total; right: 0; top: 0; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1 f7f0bf656e .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .uecdd53e426a45af51174c1f7f0bf656e:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Choose a scene in Blood Brothers EssayAt the finish of page 103 the animal has a blend of sentiments. He feels agony and delight since hes sees the elderly person being so kind to the young lady. He feels joy since hes seeing so much thoughtfulness however torment since hes never got it himself. This is desirously or aching for something that you dont have. This is as yet essential in todays life since individuals today are still perpetually discontent with what they have. Additionally, individuals today are as yet living in neediness or ignored like the animal. The animal notification that the family wasnt totally glad and their satisfaction is touched with misery. It upsets him since he thinks if such stunning animals were hopeless, it was less bizarre that I, a defective and single being, ought to be pathetic. Since hes had no direction in life he accept that he ought to be vexed in light of the fact that they are. The animal cannot comprehend why the family are disturbed on the grounds that they seem to have everything. This alludes to my prior point that individuals are perpetually discontent with what they have. Mary Shelley makes bunches of references towards God all through this book to emphasize more that Frankenstein carried on Gods job. She says that the cottagers talking was God like science. This is amusing in light of the fact that to individuals of the time they would have imagined that God would have given them the intensity of discourse yet to the animal Frankenstein is God so he ought to have given him the intensity of discourse by taking care of him. In any case, he didnt, so this implies the animal hasnt truly got a God. This would make individuals of the time believe that he was a beast since religion was essential to individuals in those days, substantially more then today. Today, this would be less significant in light of the fact that religion isnt implanted in culture as much as in those days. This is perhaps why the animal would be less inclined to be however of as a beast today. The animal requests that Frankenstein make him a female. At the time this would be crazy since this implies they might mate and may create kids. This would resemble an outsider race and this would be awful. The animal says Shall I regard man when he censures me. The animal is stating for what reason should he be caring to man when they simply avoid him. Hes saying its Frankensteins shortcoming that hes here so he ought to put forth a valiant effort to satisfy him. There is as yet a message here today that individuals must be liable for their activities. He says hes pernicious in light of the fact that hes hopeless so this additionally gives thinking to the killings.

Film Production Essays - Film Production, Film Genres, Film
Film Production In the period past to the 1930's, the overwhelming type of filmmaking was that of the wrench camera. It is not necessarily the case that engine driven cameras were definitely not conceivable. In any case, the engines to propel the film were huge to the point that they were essentially too bulky to ever be compelling. In this way, it was simply the cameraman who would wrench the film at a consistent rate to uncover the casings. At the point when it came to indicating the film, then again, engine driven projectors were very advantageous, and by the 1920's a standard 24 edges for each second was built up for anticipating films. Shooting, in any case, remained unstandardized due to the intrinsic variety in recording speeds, since it relied straightforwardly upon the cameraman. An accomplished cameraman was fit for recording a whole film at roughly a similar speed, yet regularly varieties were made in the account speed for sensational impact. Diminishing the quantity of wrenches, for instance, uncovered less casings and along these lines when anticipated at the standard 24 edges made the excited activity that portrayed a significant part of the Vaudeville film. The French producer Georges Melies was among the first to utilize changing sceneries and ensembles to recount to his story. Up until that point many film were just a couple minutes long occurring on a solitary set. Changing sets and outfits opened a huge scope of additional opportunities and prodded further development in the youngster industry. As the film business extended in America, movie producers found and expanding requirement for to set up a solitary area at which they could manufacture sets and film undisturbed. The splendid daylight, relative security of atmosphere, furthermore, shifted landscape found in California made it a perfect spot to film, quite a bit of the explanation behind the business' focus there. During this time, films were shot on a solitary reel, coming about in filmstrips that were just 15-20 minutes. Free makers spearheaded the utilization of twofold reel filmmaking during the a long time before the First World War. This permitted any longer movies and opening the entryway for additional chance, both monetarily and inventively, just as bringing into being the twofold reel camera that turned out to be such a symbol of film creation. The meaningful step forward of the 1930's was the presentation of coordinated sound and exchange in the late 1930's. First designed and appeared in the 1920's, it turned into the standard by the mid 1930's, incompletely because of the innovation of a gadget dependent on the radio that could successfully intensify sound in the theater. At first there were two accessible frameworks with which to record sound. The first was like a phonograph, and recorded the sound to a different circle. The second, increasingly mainstream, framework recorded the sound straightforwardly onto the celluloid strip. At first solid prevented the filmmaking procedure, since the cameras needed to be encased to suppress the clamor of their engines and on-screen characters couldn't wander far from the fixed mouthpieces. In any case, mechanical advances before long made up for this and the sound turned into a necessary piece of filmmaking. The joining of sound into film and the subsequent cinema draw set off various mergers in Hollywood as organizations attempted to combine their capacity (and their riches). The consequence of these associations was the production of the principal significant studios that commanded the business for a considerable length of time, Fox Studios (later twentieth Century Fox), Leow's Incorporated (later Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer), Paramount, RKO, and Warner Brothers. These studios cornered the business through vertical solidification, which means they controlled all aspects of the creation procedure. They possessed the scholars, the chiefs and makers, the on-screen characters, the gear and team, even the theaters. They controlled each progression and commanded Hollywood until 1948 when the U.S. Government saw them as an unlawful restraining infrastructure. It was additionally during this time shading in motion pictures got conceivable using the Technicolor framework. Technicolor was made utilizing a unique camera that ran three pieces of film, one in red, one in blue, and one in yellow. At the point when the three strips were solidified, the subsequent picture was in full shading, however the hues were as often as possible overstated as can be found in two such movies that were recorded thusly, Gone With The Wind (1939) and The Wizard of Oz (1939). The 1940's additionally denoted the start of the Italian development known as neorealism. This development concentrated on depicting the non-anecdotal parts of Italian culture for diversion, rather than a considerable lot of the fantasy universes that were being delivered by Hollywood. People in the future of movie producers would seek this development as motivation for their own movies portraying their home nations in a

Pizza Cut Value Chain Analysis Essay Example
Pizza Cut Value Chain Analysis Essay About Value Chain Analysis: Value Chain Analysis describes the activities that take place in a business and relates them to an analysis of the competitive strength of the business. A value chain identifies and isolates the various economic value adding activities such as differentiating a product, lowering the cost, and meeting need quickly that occur some way in every firm. It portrays activities required to create value for customers of a given product or service. It tells where low cost advantages exist; in what ways each activity can be undertaken so as to differentiate it from that of a firmââ¬â¢s competitor, how to deliver satisfaction to customers as quickly as possible. Business is viewd as a process, a chain of activities in order to find the strengths and weakness of a firm operating in a competitive environment. Competitive advantage is created and sustained only when a firm is able to perform the most critical functions either more cheaply or better than its competitors. The value creating activities of a firm, according to Michael Porter suggested that the is grouped under two headings: (1) Primary Activities those that are directly concerned with creating and delivering a product . (2) Support Activities, which are not directly involved in production, but may increase effectiveness or efficiency and work to enhance or to help the functioning of primary activities. Linking Value Chain Analysis to Competitive Advantage A business which wishes to outperform its competitors through differentiating itself through higher quality will have to perform its value chain activities better than the opposition. About Pizza Hut: Yum! Brands Inc is the owner of the Pizza Hut chain worldwide. A Fortune 300 company, Yum! Brands owns Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, AW and Long John Silverââ¬â¢s restaurants worldwide. Yum! generated more than US$ 25. 9 billion in worldwide sales in the year 2003, and has more than 33,000 restaurants in over 100 countries. Pizza Hut entered India in 1996, and opened its first restaurant in Bangalore. Since then it has captured a dominant and significant share of the pizza market and has maintained an impressive growth rate of over 40 per cent per annum. Pizza Hut is believed to have close to 50 per cent market share of the organised pizza-retailing segment in India. I have chosen few objectives of Pizza hut in Indian Market and how did it use Value chain analysis to achieve its objectives. Pizza hutââ¬â¢s main strategy to remain competitive is being customer focused and service oriented. So its main objectives based on this are: Objectives of Pizza Hut in Indian Market â⬠¢To provide world-class facility and taste to its Indian customers in a cost effective way. â⬠¢To maintain uniform taste across all its outlets. â⬠¢To present its products when and where the customer wants within committed half an hour time. â⬠¢To delight the customer, ie more beyond satisfaction. Lets us see that how Pizza hut worked to achieve its objectives by improving its activities using value chain analysis. VALUE CHAIN OF PIZZA HUT: Inbound Logistics: Buying of all raw materials as mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, sauce, base, potato, vegetables, wheat, babycorn, spices, chicken. Manufcaturing Operations: Preparing of pizza base. Customising Pizzas at outlets. Outgoing shipping and Logistics: Transporting pizza base to all pizza hut outlets, Delivery of Pizza to the customers, mainly in home delivery. Customer service: Catering to the needs of the customers before and after pizza supply. Marketing: Advertising and Campaigning of Pizza hut products. It is mainly the support activities that make product differentiation or cost reduction and add value to the product and increases customerââ¬â¢s satisfaction and delight. Lets see how pizza hut works out each of the support activities that improves the functioning of primary activities. Procurement: (This concerns how resources are acquired for the business) Main issue for Pizza hut was to provide quality tasty Pizzaââ¬â¢s at affordable cost in Indian Market. They aimed to provide a quality product to their customer and on the other hand be responsive as well. The cost will go high and so to be efficient enough they need to maintain the supply chain. For this they concentrated on economies of scale and developed a chain of local suppliers for 95% of its ingredients. However as they aim to provide world class facility and taste, Pizza hut imports the main taste causing ingredients like pepperoni, mozzarella cheese from Australia and spain resp. But due to this the cost of the product increases. But by local sourcing of all other ingredients like vegetables, tomatoes, wheat they could compensate this increased cost. Carton boxes are also purchased locally to benefit from the economies of scale Their strategic decision here is to form a chain of local suppliers to reduce their cost of material procurement. However further because of entry of other competitors like Dominoââ¬â¢s to Indian market Pizza hut further tried to reduce its cost without affecting quality or taste. For this Pizza hut has established a tie up with Bangalore based Dynamix Dairy Industries Ltd(DDIL) for sourcing mozzarella cheese. By this the cost and lead time for cheese has reduced greatly. Landed cost of cheese comes to US$ 3. 3 to 3. 5/kg and the domestic price is US$ 2. 9 to 3. 1/kg, the lead time has reduced from 60 to 30 days. Innovation and Development: The company invest resources for research on customersââ¬â¢ needs and analysing customersââ¬â¢ feedback about what people think about pizzas; what do they like or dislike about pizzas; and what do they want from pizzas. The feedbacks and research are the basis of the company for innovation and development of new products. Telephone numbers are provided for customers to give their feedback about the product and suggestions. Separate teams are dedicated for continuous survey in all the outlets and studying customer preference and taste. Through customer quiestionairre, focus group, market study changing customer needs are studied and new products introduced to continue delighting the customers and make Pizza hut different from the competition. Human Resource Department: Pizza hut invests on skills, Knowledge, training and development of employee for different positions. The company has program like annual performance appraisals designed for Team members to know exactly the expectations and existing opportunities for improvement. Information and skills are well-communicated internally among employees; the company allows open communication all the way to the top. Customer Mania is a program developed for Pizza hut employees and it is a program based on three principles: operational excellence, great marketing and real ââ¬Ësit up and take noticeââ¬â¢ standards of customer service. The program aims to instil the basics of customer service to every team member of Pizza Hut. These include smiling and greeting the customer, presentation, good service and dealing with service problems themselves without seeking managerial help. Employees set their own targets without supervision. All over the world, Pizza Hut holds a quarterly customer mania mindset session for its team members who include all the crews, managers and Restaurant Support Centre Team to reiterate and motivate employees on the importance of providing consistent product quality, service, ambiance and value for money to the customers. In this session, employees outstanding in customer service are recognised and awarded. Technology Development: Information Technology usage. Proper IT system and information management was absent in Pizza hut. This lead to billing problem, misinterpretation, miscommunication between the suppliers and the outlet managers and wastage of resources. No customer database was maintained and no knowledge about customer demand pattern, preferences, need existed. This lead to improper inventory control and excess, short supply to outlets. Built in server storage system of Pizza hut collapsed due to exponential growth of the organisation network. Pizza hut faced huge loss due to this. To solve this problem it deployed SAP ERP. Now SAP ERP plays the crucial role in helping to manage the internal operations and to maintain the extended supply chain. By this Pizza hut managed its database and invented way to maintain its increasing database. Usage of temperature controlled trucks is also a technological advancement. Other support activities for each of Primary activity: For Operations and logistics: Material handling and Transportation- In order to maintain uniform taste across all its outlets, Pizza hut had set up four commissionaries(Noida, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Bangalore) where Pizza base in made and transported to different Pizza hut outlets. Here same base is transferred to different outlets and there depending upon customerââ¬â¢s order toppings made and served. This also avoids problem rising out of sudden demand of particular pizza, as only plain base is transferred to all places and at outlets customised Pizzas are made to provide varieties to customer. It is a Push Pull strategy employed here, customers are satisfied on getting custom made pizza and Pizza hut also enjoys economies of scale in manufacturing base. The bases produced are transported by use of refrigerated ââ¬â temperature controlled trucks to keep the base as fresh as possible. There are sufficient trucks employed and also vacant space is there and when demand increases this space can be filled and by this Pizza hut doesnot incur any additional charges when the demand increases. By this way they add value by transportation and cut off cost, also increase the efficiency. Adding on, when planning for new outlets, they do so such that it locates along the trucks route so that no increase in transportation charges and there is optimum use of trucks. Supporting and enhancing Customer service: Timely delivery- As they aim to deliver Pizzaââ¬â¢s within thirty minutes, Pizza hut opens outlets in bulk numbers across the cities. So when an order is placed by customer, the outlets communicate with each other and the nearest counter delivers the pizza to the customer within 30 minutes. So by this the responsiveness and efficiency is increased. Catering to local Taste ââ¬â leveraging the Indian Advantage: Pizza hut offers pure vegetarian dine ins in some Indian cities and also offers jain Menus. By this it attracts minority segment customers. Pizza hutââ¬â¢s Indian Menu offers varieties that match to local tastes and thus it takes good care of the Indian culture and religions and designed its outlets and offerings accordingly, thereby making it a international brand with local taste. Service for differently abled people: As part of its customer service, most Pizza Hut restaurants provide facilities for people with disabilities. The company has improved its physical environment with more easily accessible facilities and has trained its employees to better understand and meet the needs of customers with disabilities. Pizza hut also offers loyalty cards to customers as a token of appreciation and makes them come back to Pizza hut again. Enhancing Marketing activity: Pizza hut has formed partnership with Nestle, Pepsi and it offers combo offers to delight its customers. They have massive TV advertisements and campaigns to enhance its visibility and attract the Indian youth and children especially. It has concepts like ice cream factory, where for one payment persons can take as much ice cream as possible. This attracts many children. Pizza hut employs various techniques like offering surprise gifts to customers, buffet system, and new concepts like hot dots to impress customers by their timely delivery. Brand image is increased by quickly resolving customer complaints, integrating feedbacks in the processes, compensating immediately for dissatisfaction, keeping up promise of delivery. All these are made possible by closely weaved communication system among the outlets. Thus by analysis of every activity in Pizza Hutââ¬â¢s business chain, it successfully modified processes which did not add value into processes that adds and increases value of end product, thereby delighting customer and make them feel as receiving more value for money spent. This tool helped Pizza hut to be cost effective and customer focused and maintain its competitive advantage.

Buster
Buster Buster Buster By Maeve Maddox A reader has a question about the word buster: Is the word buster ebonics or not? Where does this word come from? And how is it formed? The reader does not specify which of the several uses of buster prompted the question, but in any case, the word was in the language well before any significant development of the English dialect known as ebonics. Note: For readers unfamiliar with the term ebonics, the word was coined in 1973 and defined in 1975 by its proponents as ââ¬Å"the linguistic and paralinguistic features which on a concentric continuum represent the communicative competence of the West African, Caribbean, and United States slave descendants of African origin.â⬠The term quickly proved to be unwieldy and politically charged. A more neutral name for the distinctive English dialect associated with US black culture is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The first nineteen or soà Africansà to reach the English colonies arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, brought by Dutch traders who had seized them from a captured Spanish slave ship- just five years after the first documented use of buster in English. In the earliest citation in the OED (1614), buster is used to mean ââ¬Å"a person who or thing which ââ¬Ëbustsââ¬â¢ a specified thing, or causes it to break or burstâ⬠: Now death, I pray thee what is it, but a buster of bonds; a destruction of toyle? (i.e., Death is seen as a ââ¬Å"busterâ⬠of figurative chains, freeing people from bondage and toil.) This meaning of the word is evident in various terms. For example, a bronco-buster is a cowboy who prepares horses to be ridden by breaking their will to resist. Note: The Spanish adjective bronco means rough or rude. It was adopted into English as a noun to refer to an untamed or half-tamed horse. A gangbuster (1930) is an officer of a law-enforcement agency who is known for successfully, and often aggressively, fighting organized crime, breaking up gangs, and apprehending gangsters. Eliot Ness is a well-known gangbuster. By extension, gangbuster/s can mean something that is outstandingly successful; a winner, a hit. The word is used as both noun and adjective: Better thanà last season, but notà gangbustersà I think this is going to be aà real gangbuster season. Another quarter, another three months whereà gangbusterà growth remains AWOL. à My radio show isà going gangbuster.à I just picked up my third top-ten radio station in Chicago. The music business isà going gangbuster. Were celebrating all monthà longà with aà gangbusterà sale. Another meaning of buster is ââ¬Å"a person who or thing which is impressive or remarkable, especially in being more than typically large, loud, etc.â⬠Presumably, the person or thing has ââ¬Å"bustedâ⬠a norm of some kind. The OED gives the example ââ¬Å"What a buster of a lunch it turned out to be.â⬠Buster is used as a form of address, sometimes with affection and sometimes with hostility. For example, a parent or babysitter might say to a child, ââ¬Å"Time for bed, Buster.â⬠On the other hand, someone being annoyed by a stranger might say, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t come any closer, Buster, or Iââ¬â¢ll call a cop.â⬠The popularity of Buster as a nickname for little boys may owe something to the fame of the actor Buster Keaton (1895-1966). The son of vaudeville performers, Keaton was famous as a child actor long before his adult successes. According to legend, he acquired his nickname when he fell down a flight of stairs and Harry Houdini, who was present, quipped, ââ¬Å"That was a real buster!â⬠Keatonââ¬â¢s father immediately created ââ¬Å"Buster Keatonâ⬠as his sonââ¬â¢s stage name. The comic book character Buster Brown, created by cartoonist Richard F. Outcault in 1902,à was another cultural icon that popularized the name Buster. When a shoe manufacturer adopted the character as its logo in 1904, the name received a boost from national advertising. I suspect that plenty of Americans of a certain age can still sing the Buster Brown jingle. Buster is popular as a name for pets. Here are some reasons pet owners chose the name: Weà named him Buster becauseà he had a busted nose.à My neighborà named him Buster, cause he was a Buster to try and catch. You see my friends from the special ed place that my aunt works atà named him Buster becauseà he got into a lot of trouble and got caught.à I haveà named him Buster becauseà he is somewhat bossy and pushy with my sisters steer.à I named him Buster becauseà he was tossed out of the car. Examine broken blossoms significance as an early example of Hollywoods Essay
Examine broken blossoms significance as an early example of Hollywoods portrayal of Asian culture - Essay Example Movies were being made showing both existing and new trends in life. In the light of these, movies such as Broken Blossoms were made with themes or aspects that reflected other cultures. In this 1900s, Hollywood did not offer Asian culture much positivity in their movies. In most cases, they were viewed as outcasts, strange, and mysterious. This does not mean that Hollywood held anything against Asians; rather, it is possible that due to its short-termed experience with the culture, it might have misunderstood or misinterpreted it. All in all, these are examples of the earliest inclusion of Asian Culture in Hollywood. The following study text will evaluate the 1919 American silent film and in it highlight the different examples of Asian culture as applied within it. The film revolves around Cheng Huan, a Chinese, who leaves for the Anglo-Saxon lands to spread Buddhaââ¬â¢s message. Upon getting to London, his dream of spreading Buddhism is endangered by the reality that he finds there; that everyone is too preoccupied with their individual lives. As such, his chances of succeeding are low. He however finds a way through when he meets Lucy Burrows. Burrows is the daughter of a fierce boxer, Battling Burrows. She seems unwanted and mistreated by her father. One evening, she is beaten and sent away by her father and when she is out there, meets Cheng Huan. Huan nurses Miss Burrows and as she recovers, they develop a mutual relationship. They are similar in that both seem misplaced in society. Their relationship is interrupted when Battling hears of their relationship and goes to get her. He drags her home, drunk. Once in her room, she fears her fatherââ¬â¢s temper and contemptuous behavior and locks herself in a closet to escape him. Battling however finds her and beats her lifeless. Cheng pursues the tow and by the time he accesses her room, it is too late. Coincidentally, Battling bursts into Miss Burrowsââ¬â¢ room as he wants

Did western influences hasten the decline of the Qing dynasty Why or Essay
Did western influences hasten the decline of the Qing dynasty Why or why not - Essay Example First theory is concerned with China?à ¦s internal problems, including corruption, poverty and abuse of powers of the ruling class.â⬠(34) But another sect of the historians argues that even though the Qing Dynasty was wearing out due to the heavy internal troubles, the western influences were at the center of these internal adversaries. Indeed the western influences were not the military interferences and threats to the dynasty in its concrete sense. Rather the western industrial revolution, rapid urbanization, growing individualism and the rapid changes and reorganizations of the socio-economic fields, as again Stanley says, ââ¬Å"The theory supported by the Western World is that imperialism and introduction of western ideas in China ultimately caused the disintegration of Qingâ⬠(). Fairly in the early twentieth century Chinnââ¬â¢s socioeconomic and political cultures began to be influenced by the European Industrial Revolution. The pro-western influence school of h istorians purports that even if there were no internal conflicts, the Qing Dynasty would have to respond to the demand of the age. ... d of the Napoleonic War, the growth of industrial revolutions and the European Colonial presence in the neighboring states of China allured the West to take hold of vast Chinese markets (78). The Chinese markets were potential for the European Colonial powers in the late 19th Century in two ways: firstly, China was a potential market for the West to market their industrially produced goods and secondly, the country was a great reserve of raw materials that could feed the demonically growing industries in Europe. These commercial interests of the European nations in China provoked them to interfere into the internal issues of the country. Consequently the Opium War took place, greatly determining the future of the Qing dynasty (Cotterell 84-9). Indeed the root of the Opium War lies in the increasing Irish-British interest in the Lucrative Opium business in the mid 19th century. Since the Opium trade began to be less lucrative for the Chinese due to the Turkish cheaper supply in the op ium market, the Qing Emperor Daoguang banned the trade in contradiction to the expectation of the British traders. Eventually the Opium War began between the British-Irish Ally and the Qing Dynasty and ended upon causing some irreparable loss to the Qing Dynasty. Indeed the Qing Dynastyââ¬â¢s defeat in the First Opium War inspired the Western powers to interfere and manipulate the subsequent rebellions and internal conflicts in their own favor. Though he Qing Dynasty received the reluctant western support during the Taiping Rebellion, Nien Rebellion and a number of other rebellions, these rebellions were greatly caused by and connected to western commercial interests in the country. The Taiping Rebels, though were confronted by the allied Chinese-West Troops, received the non-official support

Research Design DB Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Research Design DB - Essay Example The said actions resulted to a vicious cycle of manipulating records to be able to present a continuous growth of the company (Fusaro, Miller, & James, 2002). Basically, the misrepresentation of the company records can be considered as an escalating problem that is a continuous threat to the companyââ¬â¢s survival. The fraud has been kept for long due to the fact there is an existence of accounts in other countries that were able to hide the real losses of the company. In the absence of such accounts, the manipulation of the records cannot be possible. On the other hand though, although the said actions are carefully undertaken, the unconventional presentation of records continuously raised suspicion until the said company finally collapsed due to the lack of supporting assets (Fusaro, Miller, & James, 2002). The misuse of the data by Enron can be considered to benefit the reputation and the price of the stocks during the particular time. The company had been able to continuously lead the market although loses can be considered substantial. The said loses which are well hidden during that time had been the cause of the fall of the company. Every data that are related to finding out the crimes committed limits the operation of the company (Bazerman, 2006; Fusaro, Miller, & James, 2002). In relation the ethical implications of the Enron case, the fraud and deceit of the different parties that are involved can be considered as the main issue. Basically, any misrepresentation of data specifically in business organizations can be ethically questioned. The fact that the company lacks the real assets that amounts to the values represented in the records can be considered as the main basis of the bound failure of Enron. In addition, the ethical implications of such actions of the financial personnel can be considered of detrimental effects in any business

Racial Privilege in America Past and Present Essay -- essays research
The Blame Game: a Prelude to Racial Privilege In order to fully understand an easily debatable and highly controversial policy, such as racial privilege, one must first understand the political and social climates that led up to it. Racial privilege has been practiced during two periods in Americaââ¬â¢s past: the post-reconstruction era, via Jim Crow laws, and today, by way of affirmative action. After Reconstruction in the American south, landowners reorganized their land in such a way that it could be farmed without the use of slaves. The most common structure employed sharecropping, in which the land owner divided his property into several plots of land, each farmed by different individuals who paid for the use of this land with a predetermined percentage of their harvested crop. At its onset, sharecropping was a racially diverse program. Boyer et all notes that ââ¬Å"By 1880â⬠¦ white sharecroppers now outnumbered black ones, although a higher proportion of southern blacks, about 75 percent, were involved in the systemâ⬠(597). Tenants, most having no capital with which to purchase farm equipment, livestock, and seed, offer yet another pre-determined percentage of their harvested crop as collateral and repayment for loans. Since both the landowner and the creditor were invested in the profitability of the farmerââ¬â¢s crops, they insisted that these farmer s raise only easily marketable cash-crops, limiting crop diversification (Boyer 598). When supply began to exceed demand, value of these crops rapidly declined. Sharecroppers, both white and black, were plunged heavily into debt and poverty. The failure of this system presented a window of opportunity for the Democratic leaders of the Old South who wish to restore the power stru... ... Eds. Christopher Jencks, and Meredith Phillips. African American vs. Caucasian Americans Essay
At first glance some people might consider this paper to be on the racial side, however it was all written by observations made. There are many differences between African Americans and Caucasians, some people donââ¬â¢t see the differences because of ignorance . You must read the paper with an open mind and take none of this to heart. African American and Caucasians function differently in public surroundings. When you see a young African American you usually see them in groups of four of more. However, when one of them gets into a disagreement five to ten more show up in their defense. They are a very close knit group of individuals. I have also noticed that when you see a young African American walking around they are usually singing, talking very loud or running around. Also when they are in groups they are very loud and take over the area that they occupy. On the other hand when you see Caucasians they are rarely in groups of three or more. To top it off when someone in one of their groups gets in trouble the rest of the group is nowhere to be found. Most times when you see young Caucasian people in a group they are for the most part within a normal speaking level. These two groups tend to act differently in the public due to their cultural differences. There are a number of differences between the churches of African Americans and Caucasians. At most typical African American churches there are no true sermons. The African American churches tend to do more entertaining rather than teaching. They also do a great deal of singing and dancing involved in there praising of God. They emphasize fellowship in their churches especially after church when they all gather and close the celebration with a meal together. However at a typical Caucasian church there are a few differences. To start it off when you first walk in you get a program detailing what will be happening through the service. They tend to structure the whole service around a sermon or story. The service every week is very predictable as to what will happen. The Caucasian churches are more there to teach the ways of the lord as they have interpreted it. Although not all the African American and Caucasian churches are along this line a majority of the main stream ones are.

Identifying Useful Measures For It Investment Finance Essay - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 8 Words: 2261 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Finance Essay Type Argumentative essay Did you like this example? In this section Im going to identify useful measures for IT investment and it is implication for financial performance of banks. The determination of IT investment is problematic because of lack of consensus in defining and measuring such investment. Researchers have difficulty in agreeing as to what model actually constitutes IT. Some used a narrow definition that includes only an information system while others used a broader definition that also includes data communication. Some used direct measures while others used surrogate measures. Previous researchers have used various ratios as measures of IT investment. Bender and Harris and Katz used IT expense as a percentage of total operating expenses as a measure. The Diebold group used IT budget as a percentage of revenue. A similar measure, It expense to premium income, was also used by Harris and Katz. All of those ratios have advantages and disadvantages. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Identifying Useful Measures For It Investment Finance Essay" essay for you Create order The population is all the LCB banks which are registered in Colombo stock exchange, and the sample will be five banks in that population. It includes two government banks and three non government banks, namely Bank of Ceylon, Peoples bank, commercial bank, Hatton national bank and HSBC. Primary and secondary research will be integrated as a data gathering procedure. The reason for this is to be able to provide adequate discussion for the readers that will help them understand more about the issue and the different variables that involve with it. In the primary research, managers and staff will be surveyed and will be distributed to the respondents through email. Participation of the respondents will be treated with maximum confidentiality. Two questionnaire papers will be surveyed. First one provide for the managers and it will included some questions regarding to requesting information about the IT investments and financial performance of the banks and other one provide to staff members of the IT department asking questions to get information about the computers usability and disadvantages or advantages of IT. But this survey method has more drawbacks, such as information may not be 100% reliable, some managers may reluctant to give some information, understanding weaknesses may be occurred and if it is a questionnaire, some responding banks may not have defined IT investment as same way. To avoid those drawbacks, I have decided to use secondary data for my research. Sources in secondary research will include annual reports, previous research reports, newspaper, magazine and journal content. Therefore it is efficient using current year financial statements and highlights for quarterly and annual and other reports as a secondary data. It is more reliable than survey. As well as it provide two or three year comparison of balance sheet, income statement and operating income, revenue and earnings per share of the banks. My research period will be 2003 to 2009 and to get present condition information current year will be surveyed. . Data will be analyzed using the latest SPSS software. Model 1 Since the norms for IT investment and Banks financial performances data vary from bank to bank , proir to conducting statitical analysis, each ratio will be standardized by subtracting its mean from the ratio itself and and then deviding the result by standard deviation. For avoid varinces of datas it will effective to mesure mean,Standard deviation and range for IT investment and financial performance of the banks. Budgeted IT investment ratio = Budgeted IT investment *100 Total RevenueTo mesure a banks IT invetment, the present research uses five ratios, including IT budget as a percentage of revenue, value of a banks IT as a percentage of revenue, percentage of IT budget spent on staff, percentage of IT budget spent on the training of IT staff and number of PCs and terminals as a percentage of total employee. The first ratio reveals how much a bank is spending on IT relative to its compititors. It can be calculate Value of IT investment ratio = IT value *100 Total RevenueThe IT value ratio reflect to current position of a banks technology, IT value figures are estimates of the current market value for all IT equipments,it can be calculate The staff spending cirterion reflects the banks relative investment in IT staff. It can be calculate Budgeted IT spend for staff = Budgeted IT spend on staff *100 Number of IT staff As well as information system managers must keep their employee well trained. The trining ratio used to mesure the relative amount spent by bank for this purpose. It can be calculate Budgeted IT investment on training staff = Budgeted IT spend on training staff *100 No of training Staff The last ratio mesures the extent to which the bank has made IT availabe to banks users. This ratio can be calculate IT usability ratio = No of PCs and terminals *100 Total employees Using above ratios I will find out mean and standard deviation of those ratios. Standard deviation is a measure of how far apart the data are from the average of the data. If all the observations are close to their average then the standard deviation will be small. Based on review of previous research, five direct measures of financial performance will be selected for this study. Return on investment (ROI), Return on equity (ROE), Return on assets (ROA), Earnings per share (EPS) and Net profit margin (NPM) ROI = Gain from investment-Cost of investment Cost of investment Return on investment can be measured using following ratio, Return on equity (ROE) can be calculate, ROE = Net income Shareholder equity ROA = Net income Total AssetsReturn on assets (ROA) can be calculate, EPS = Net income Dividends on preferred stock Average outstanding sharesEarnings per share (EPS) can be calculate, Net profit margin (NPM) can be calculate NPM = Net profit Total Income After measuring mean and standard deviation it is effective to measure correlation of those two set of variables. Correlation is a statistical measurement of the relationship between two variables. Possible correlations range from +1 to -1. A zero correlation indicates that there is no relationship between the variables. A correlation of -1 indicates a perfect negative correlation, meaning that as one variable goes up, the other goes down. A correlation of +1 indicates a perfect positive correlation, meaning that both variables move in the same direction together. Correlation helps to identify the relationship between Information technology and financial performance of the banks. In the first step will be find out IT investments correlated with themselves and financial performance correlated with themselves. Then the IT investment ratios will be next correlated with the financial performance ratios to investigate for the possible presence of, and the nature of pair wise relationship among the measures. Carl Pearson correlation analysis will be use for this purpose. Model 2 Above model shows that how much IT investments affecting to the financial performances, it shows only percentage figures. But hypothesis testing may be reflecting what factors actually affect to the increase financial performances relating IT investments. So I have selected hypothesis testing as my second model. In this model Key variables will be measured in an attempt to practice identifying dependent and independent variables and to explain how the independent variable affects the dependent variable. Independent Variable Dependent variable Internet banking ATM machines Computer system Return on Equity (ROE) Net profit margin (NPM) Earnings per share (EPS) Return on Investment (ROI) R According to above diagram, financial performances (dependent variable) depend on following financial indicators. Internet Bank: It is how the Internet used frequently by the Bank from a variable It is one of the independent variables, ATM: The number of ATMs owned by the bank in the period, it is one of the independent variables. , Computer system: It is the net investment bank in the computer software, hardware and equipment in the period i. It is one of the independent variables However, this model will also divide into another sub-models concerned with measuring the impact of independent factors of each of the indicators of financial performances, Model Affecting variables Return on Equity(ROE) Internet banking, ATM machines, Computer system (Hardware, software and other equipment) Net profit margin(NPM) Internet banking, ATM machines, Computer system (Hardware, software and other equipment) Earnings per share(EPS) Internet banking, ATM machines, Computer system (Hardware, software and other equipment) Return on Investment (ROI) Internet banking, ATM machines, Computer system (Hardware, software and other equipment) Hypotheses Development The main Hypotheses is There is no statistically significant impact on the use of information technology to improve the financial performance in Sri Lankan banks. H01: There is no statistically significant impact on the use of IT in Sri Lankan banks in the ROE H02: There is no statistically significant impact on the use of IT in Sri Lankan banks in the NPM H03: There is no statistically significant impact on the use of IT in Sri Lankan banks in the EPS H04: There is no statistically significant impact on the use of IT in Sri Lankan banks in the ROI Hypothesis Testing First I am going to examine the reliability of statistical analysis for the data by identifying how this data is close to normal distribution, if the data will not have normal distribution, then it should be a subject to necessary treatment . If it will close to the normal distribution I can use it correctly to test the hypothesis. After that I will be use regression model to identify effect of many independent variables on dependent variable. Regression analysis includes techniques for modeling and analyzing several variables, when the focus is on the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. More specifically, regression analysis helps to understand how the typical value of the dependent variable changes when any one of the independent variables is varied, while the other independent variables are held fixed. Finally I will test above sub models using regression model. Data The impact of Internet-Banking on Bank Profitability- The Case of Turkey (by Assist. Prof. Dr. Ceylan Onay et al) under this topic they examined about internet banking on banks profitability. They follow an empirical model based on previous works by Berger(1995), Demirguc-Kunt and Huizinga (1999) and by Quispe-Agnoli and Whisler (2006), where they define bank performance, Yit (measured by ratio of banks pre-tax profits to total assets(ROA) or to its equity(ROE) or ratio of its net interest revenue to its total assets(MARGIN)) for bank i in year t as follows: ÃÆ'Ã
½Ãâà ±0 is a bank fixed effect term that captures time-invariant influences specific to bank i, MACROt is a matrix of macroeconomic variables in Turkey in year t that include percentage change in real GDP per capita and average lending rate charged by banks in year t. Xit is a matrix of bank-specific control variables: Total deposits in bank i as a ratio of total assets in year t, total loans of bank i as a ratio of total assets in year t. BANKCRIt is a dummy variable of banking crisis in Turkey that takes on a value of 1 if there is a systemic bank crisis respectively in the country at time t and 0 if none. They employ this variable to control for changes in banks performance as a result of banking crisis in the country for the period. Following the work of Hernando and Nieto(2007) they employ a matrix of dummy variables, INTERNETJ , that are defined based on the time of adoption of a transactional website by the bank. Thus, INTERNET1 is a dummy variable that equals 1 if the bank introduced a transactional web site in year t (during the past 12 months). Similarly, INTERNET2 equals 1 if the bank adopted online banking in year t-1. We go back as late as t-2 to capture changes in bank performance over time. ÃÆ'Ã
½Ãâà µit is a mean zero, constant variance disturbance term. To analyze the effects of internet banking on bank performance, we have collected panel data from 14 commercial and savings banks in Turkey that have adopted internet banking sometime between 1996 and 2005. A list of banks included in our analysis along with their respective years of internet banking adoption is available. Their dataset is drawn from income statements and balance sheets found in the BANKSCOPE Database for Turkish banks compiled by Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing (BvDEP). It covers a period of ten years (1996-2005) and is unbalanced due to the unavailability of data for some of the banks in our sample. The data on the timing of the adoption of internet banking for each bank is obtained from Polatoglu and Ekin (2001). Dates of episodes of systemic banking crises in Turkey during which some or all of banking capital is exhausted is obtained from Caprio et als Banking Crisis Database(2005). The dummy variable BANKCRI is obtained by using this information[1]. Table 3.2 lists the banking crises and time frames used in the population of this variable. For macroeconomic data, they have consulted IMFs IFS database (in obtaining data on the average lending rate) and Conference Boards Total Economy Database(for the gdp per capita values ) They found that the adoption of online banking does not seem to have a significant impact on the performance of Turkish banks measured in terms of ROA, ROE or MARGIN in the year of adoption(INTERNET1). However, in the following year (INTERNET2), they saw a significant decrease in the profitability. This could be attributed to the increase in IT expenditures following the adoption of the new technology. Only in the second year following the adoption of the technology, they examined a positive coefficient of the variable on the ROE estimation. This indicates that the process was gradual. The sign of the coefficient on the ROA for the same period was also positive but this variable was not significant.
